Penguin

   Man

   Good Day,

Richard 'Dickie' Brisbin, 20th-century 'penguin boy', banner by Fred Johnson, ca. 1960s.

I was hoping you may be able to help me or give me some ideas on where to go to get information.  My father came to Toronto, Canada in the early 50's.  He told us a story about a Sideshow act at the Canadian National Exhibition (perhaps the Midway) that he claims was called the Penguin Man.  It could be 50's or 60's, I'm not sure.  I contacted Toronto Archives and the lady there said she had never heard of a Penguin Man.  Do you have any ideas on how I can find out information about this possibility?  Perhaps he was the Bird Man or something,  My dad remembers him as a "Penguin".

Reading this through, I have to say this is likely the strangest email I've written but I actually am asking if you know of a Penguin Man....He! He!

Thanks in advance for whatever help you can offer.

Paul,

Richard 'Dickie' Brisbin worked many midways throughout the United States and Canada.  It was most likely him that your father seen during the time frame you have mentioned.

There were others who appeared as Penguin Girls and Boys.

PENGUIN BOY/GIRL/ETC. - Human oddity afflicted with foreshortened limbs, usually with hands and feet attached directly to the torso without arms or legs. See Seal Boy/Girl.
