Attractions - Pt 5

Here are more things you can enjoy when you visit Coney Island. Needless to say, the Coney Island Beach has been the essence of recreation during the summer season. There are also many man-made entertainments to be enjoyed by people of all ages when they visit here.

These entertainments are literally nothing compared to the Golden Era of the Coney Island (about 100 years ago). Nevertheless, there are still no other locations with two major amusement parks operating side by side in New York City today.

“Free Summer Events at Astroland”.

The New York City based circus theater company Circus Amok in performance with live music at Astroland Amusement Park. There are no animals in this particular show. There are comedy stage acts with acrobatic performances. They perform for free all over New York City during the summer. The company comprises 7 ring performers, a 7 member live band, 3 roustabouts, and a trucker/technician extraordinaire.  A very nice treat for the day! (September 3, 2007)

A giant queen and her bees.  Is this a reflection of the current mysterious phenomenon of the disappearance of bees from the planet Earth?

Yes, it’s a real Bearded Lady--Jennifer Miller, 34, Founder of Circus Amok!  She is real and alive and singing on the stage!  A true Coney Island moment!  You are precious! (I thought you were a man until I heard your feminine voice.  LOL) (September 3, 2007)

Siren Music Festival booklet. This FREE music festival held on July 21, 2007 had two big stages on the amusement park grounds in Coney Island. The Siren was a mythical, monstrous, carnivorous bird with a head of the woman which sang a song to paralyze sailors so she could kill and eat them. In later centuries, the monster became a mermaid. I think “Siren” is a perfect name for this festival at Coney Island which was once the Holy Land of the freaks and monsters of the world. Note the wording on the brochure:  “Coney Island, NYC” rather than “Coney Island, Brooklyn” because everyone knows where Coney Island is and what kind of culture it represents. (There are over 50 areas in Brooklyn--one of the five boroughs of New York City).  Less than 100 years ago, Coney Island was bigger and more spectacular than Hollywood, Las Vegas, Disney World, Six Flags, and 42nd Street combined! (July 21, 2007)

An advertisement for the 2007 Brooklyn Open - a Pro Beach Volleyball tornament.  Pricy but if you love the sport, deadly sunlight at the killer beach, this is IT in Coney Island during August. (August 24, 2007)

Coney Island Ultimate Frisbee Tournament sign. 2007 marked the tournament’s first year. Over a half-dozen professional teams competed all day on the Coney Island Beach between West 21st Street and West 23rd Street. Nearly 100 people registered (64 men and 26 women as of June 7, 2007) for this historical event according to a co-organizer. The hazy weather was a blessing for them, too. One of the teams was named “Sea Rabbit” after my sea monster Sea Rabbit (“Seara”). I attended the event with Seara as an official local event supporter. Takeshi Yamada, Seara, co-organizer Lee, and some of the hot team members. June 9 (Sat), 2007
