The following article is about a public lecture by Takeshi Yamada entitled “Mythic Creatures: Dragons and Mermaids” held at the Brooklyn Public Library - Coney Island branch, Brooklyn, New York on October 29, 2008. Takeshi Yamada is one of the most influential and active educators in New York City with numerous recognitions including two “Key to the City” from Mayors. He is also a prolific author of article publications including 11 published books, and an artist with over 450 fine art exhibitions with his paintings and sculptures exhibited internationally. Yamada has also taught classes and given public lectures at over 40 educational institutions internationally. In addition, rogue taxidermy artworks, sideshow gaffs, large sideshow banners and showfronts created by Yamada have been exhibited at more than 30 state fairs and festivals annually around the nation. This manuscript was produced by Dr. Eriko N. Bond, noted art critic and New York City author, as told by Takeshi Yamada.

On October 29, 2008, a popular annual art lecture by Takeshi Yamada for the general public at Coney Island Library on the occasion of Halloween was held. Admission was free for this special lecture.

 

Yamada has taught classes and given art lectures at over 40 educational institutions in Japan and the United States including the American Museum of Natural History in Manhattan. This is one of many educational and cultural outreach programs of the Museum of World Wonders and Yamada Art Center in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York.

 

At the main auditorium of the Coney Island Library, Takeshi Yamada talked about the fascinating subject matters such as real dragons, real mermaids, Cabinet of Curiosities, rogue taxidermy, American circus sideshows, Dime Museums, marine biology, cryptozoology, cryptids, UMA (Unidentified Mysterious Animal), molecular biology, endangered species, ecology, geopolitics, fraud of man-created Global Cooling in 1970’s, fraud of man-created Global Warming in recent years, Terra-forming, environment, genetic engineering, Invasive Alien Species, real Vampires, horseshoe crabs, mermaid religions in Asian countries, large dragons on display at natural history museums, alchemy, etc.

This spectacular art exhibition, periodical art tours, and annual lectures are sponsored by Museum of World Wonders in Coney Island and Brooklyn Public Library. This Cabinet of Curiosities exhibition or Freak Show is a variation of a time honored American main stream family entertainment yesteryears called Dime Museum style of American sideshow with the “contemporary steroid”.
