Big John Strong Circus

The hardest, most physical labor I ever did was as a member of Big John and Son's tent crew. Seven of us put that thing up every morning and took it down every night. Actually, there were eight of us...Baby Neena always pulled up the center pole. Big Wally was boss. 'Work..or fight.' was his motto.  No one ever fought, that I heard of. 'LET'S GO
GET DIRTY!' Big Wally growled when we all crawled under the canvas to pull up the poles.

We set up in primarily three types of lots:
*Vacant lots
*Shopping Center parking lots
*School yards

Vacant lots were the worst. Dusty, rocky, weedy and uneven. Plus, you never knew how well the tent stakes would hold. Shopping Center parking lots weren't that good either. After the last show at teardown, we had to fill up the tent stake holes with asphalt. Schools?

They were the best, boy. Soft, cool, even, and grassy! And best of all, there was always a bathroom nearby..and a water fountain..and tetherball, but we never had time to play tetherball.
