I HAVE
SEARCHED for
strange and unusual things all
my life but never have I been
more astonished than when
climbing from floor to floor in
the Safety Razor Company in
Boston during my recent visit
there.
Yes, I've witnessed Black Magic
underneath the tropical African
stars - I've been astounded on
the Yellow River by Chinese
magicians, and I've watched the
magic of the Hindus on the River
Ganges, but I doubt if anything
they did could equal the "Black
Box" of Gillette, which I
watched actually making steel
"talk."
Messages relayed from this magi
"Black Box' to a great battery
of automatic switches, control
the hardening of Gillette steel
as it passes through electric
furnaces. In effect, this
amazing device makes steel
"talk" orders more or less heat
in the furnaces as the condition
of the steel demands. This
results in constant uniformity
in the steel - contributes in a
truly remarkable way to the
comfort you experience when you
shave with the Gillette blade.
But that isn't all I saw 4-ton
blade sharpeners adjustable to
1/10,000 of an inch - I saw real
diamonds used to measure the
hardness of steel blades - I saw
them sterilized with powerful
antiseptic - I saw their
sharpness measured by beams of
light - I saw the steel
"X-Rayed" by an amazing
instrument that "sees" through
metal, instantly detecting
hidden defects.
To top it all I saw the blades
pass through 280 feet of
sharpening surface that buffed
them so incredibly keen and
smooth shaving - so sharp that
the cutting edges are
invisible, Believe It or Not
- and all to caress the chin of
modern man!
And so I say that - just as the
bristles of Buddha bowed
reverently in contemplation 'neath
the Bho Tree, and the Beard of
the Prophet drooped devoutly
five times a day in prayer - so
should the clean shaved chin of
modern man give a nod each
morning toward the Gillette
factory in Boston. Yes- I
would impress upon you that it
behooves and becomes a man to
shave himself with dignity - and
the born-of-magic Gillette
blade.
