Don
Leslie was a professional entertainer with many years in
the business.
First
trained by Carlos
Leal and later by Alex Linton, two of the best ever to grace a
circus sideshow stage, Capt Don carved out a place for himself
in outdoor showbiz history.
When he
worked for our show in the late 1980s, Don had recovered from
alcoholism and was a real asset to our tour.
As a
performer, he was a Tattooed Man, Human Blockhead, Fire Eater,
World Champion Sword Swallower, Lecturer and Talker plus could
do many other acts in the show such as blade box, bed of nails,
and human pincushion in the blow.
We shared
living quarters while on the road. He brought out his son and
daughter who also worked the show while in New England (Don was
from Mass.)
He was a
confirmed atheist, had no use for Christianity, and ran off
anyone trying to convert him to the faith. We stayed in contact
over the years.
He was a
true showman and a unique personality who will be missed by all
who knew him...
Jeff &
Sue Murray - Harmur Shows......
This is a
true tragedy. Capt. Don was a very good friend as well as
mentor. He was also a very accomplished musician for those of
you that did not know. I will sorely miss this man.
I do ask
one thing of everyone.....that either knew him or knew of him...
Don always
said "We come not to be honored, but to be remembered".
Please,
those of you who knew him, NEVER forget him!!
He will be
in my heart for the rest of my life.
