Spalding Gray, performance artist, actor, and writer in his "Stories from the 1981 Tennessee State Fair," written for In Search of the Monkey Girl, traveled with Randal Levenson on his sideshow excursion to Nashville in 1981. In his alternately comic, bewildered, and appreciative account Gray describes their accommodations in a pickup truck parked between disco-blaring sideshow trailers and their neighbor Priscilla the Monkey Girl and Emmett the Alligator Man. A natural storyteller, Gray relates the newcomer's view of the fast-paced cacophony of carnival life.
