The Sideshow is the best thing next to the Circus…

By Professor Laszlo

Showman at Large

As a Performer and a Promoter, my perspective would necessarily be from the inside looking out…

I trained long and hard for the feats of physical accomplishment that constituted my performance as a Flyer in the Circus…

Excellence was not only desirable, but it was actually a requirement to survival…

Doing a good job was very important…

Many Circus performers doubled in the Sideshow…

Sideshow work was less stressful and I had fun with it…

I learned by doing. At one time or another, I did every kind of pitch and working act ever seen on the Midway…

I started early. Legendary Showman Bob Atterbury gifted me with my first gaff at the age of twelve. A Tesla Coil for my very own Electric Chair.

Miss Electra had already given me quite a shock…

I wasn’t quite certain how that device gotten her all charged up, but I was quite certain that I wanted to own one…

I was not only in the Sideshow, I was in the Sideshow business. I now owned my own props and had experience …

My career goal was to be a Sideshow manager and to have several Showgirls working under me on a part time basis…

The Sideshow was the only thing I had found that was even stranger than the Circus…

In the Circus the act was an intricate dance performed in mid air to win some applause…

It was all about a successful catch…

In the Sideshow the act was a crafty pitch to win a nickel or a dime…

It was all about a successful pitch…

While the Circus taught me the art of Performance, it was the Sideshow that taught me the art of Showmanship…

And the one without the other is kind of like sex without a partner…

Or maybe like a show without an audience…
